It was brilliant to drop into the Family Fun Day held at the MFC Foundation Herlingshaw Centre in Eston last week. It is part of a brilliant programme run by Grandparents Plus in partnership with Middlesbrough Football Foundation and Teesside University and supported by Sport England Sport England.
There are many children in Redcar and Cleveland who are looked after by members of their family that are not their parents, with over half being grandparents. There are very few projects available to support these ‘kinship care’ families and in particular many of them feel they struggle maintain an active lifestyle or have places where they can spend quality time together.
So it was fantastic to see so many children and their grandparents having a great day, playing games and learning new sports together. I really enjoyed meeting them all and having a kickabout!
Around the country we know that kinship carers often don’t get the help and support that they need, so I have pulled together the cross-party Kinship Care Parliamentary Taskforce to look at how we can support these families better. Projects like this should be widely available around the country and we know people need better advice and support at times of crisis in their families. Well done to everyone involved in this excellent project!
