Responding to the news that the US will apply 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminium imported from the Britain, Labour MP for Redcar Anna Turley said:
“Trump’s steel tariffs are a devastating blow to UK steel and yet again the government have let down the industry and thousands of steelworkers by failing to secure the exemption they promised.
“In March I warned the International Trade Secretary not to pin all of the government’s hopes on Trump taking favour with the UK but they were keen to talk up the special relationship. A relationship which now looks weak and not worth what we thought it was.
“If Theresa May is pinning her hopes for post-Brexit on protectionist Trump then it doesn’t bode well for the global trade boom we were promised.
“The government must now do all they can to work with our EU partners to prevent escalating trade wars and support safeguards, both for the tariffs and the surplus steel which could now find itself dumped on British shores. British steel needs a government prepared to fight tooth and nail for its interests.”
