On Sunday 30th March, MPs from Teesside and Tyneside came together to support the new 2014 Speedway season.
Newcastle MP Nick Brown and Middlesbrough MPs Tom Blenkinsop and Andy McDonald were joined by Anna Turley, Labour’s Redcar Parliamentary candidate, to watch the race between two of the regions Speedway teams. The season’s first race between the Newcastle Diamonds and the Redcar Bears at Brough Park in Byker, which saw the Diamonds finish victorious, was a chance for MPs across the region to reaffirm their support for Speedway.
However the rivalry between Redcar and Newcastle on the race track does not extend to the Region’s MPs. Nick Brown, Newcastle Diamonds supporter and Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Speedway in Westminster, said “Speedway has an active group of Members of Parliament supporting the sport in Westminster and it’s great to see MPs supporting their local teams. We have four well supported Speedway Teams in the North and the Speedway Parliamentary group wishes them all well for the 2014 season.”
Anna Turley, Labour's candidate for Redcar said:
"It was a great night even though the result was disappointing for the Bears. Conditions meant that the races were pretty tough but the guys were brave and it made for some dramatic rides! You can't beat Speedway for a top family night out, and hopefully I can work with Nick in future, as Chair of the Parliamentary Group, to help Speedway have a bright future here in the North East."
