Anna backs call to ‘show respect for shopworkers’

Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Anna Turley joined staff at The Co-operative Food store in Marske to back a campaign calling on shoppers to show respect for retail workers.

Anna’s visit is in support of shopworkers’ union Usdaw’s “Freedom from Fear” campaign, and in particular Respect for Shopworkers Week” (5-9 November).

As a community retailer, The Co-operative Food has taken a central role in tackling retail crime, and is backing Usdaw’s campaign.

Anna Turley said:
“Shopworkers, like all workers, are entitled to go about their work without the threat of assault or abuse. I fully support the Usdaw campaign to show respect for shopworkers and to see tougher penalties for people who use violence, threats and abuse against them. I am also deeply concerned at plans by the Government to make cuts to criminal injuries compensation, which allows victims of serious crime to make up any loss in wages if they are forced to take time of work. Why is the Government again hurting the most vulnerable people in society?”
